Volvo Trucks are famous with their amazing tricks, done with large trucks and stuntmen. Not so long ago they managed to convince a paraglider pilot to participate in one of the craziest adventures, when they towed him by a Volvo FH truck. However, now company is showing its fun side by putting its two racing vehicles into a fight: The Iron Knight truck against the Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 racing car.
Sure, racing a truck against a car is not fair. But The Iron Knight is not an ordinary truck – it is so much more than that. Even looking at it you can tell it has a much lower profile and aero body kit. It cannot tow anything though – there are bars at the back, installed to increase rigidity. And rigidity is what it needs, because in this configuration The Iron Knight has 2400 horse power and 6000 Nm of torque, which is good enough to launch a truck to 100 km/ h in just 4.6 seconds. Volvo wanted to express the enthusiasm of its engineers and allowed them to play a little, and that is what they came up with – a record breaking fast performance vehicle on FH basis.
On the other ring corner there was the Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 racing car. It is not slow either, even though it has a much smaller turbocharged four cylinder engine. It has proven itself very well in many races around the world. So now it had to stand its ground against The Iron Knight. At first vehicles raced in a drag strip – this is very interesting, since both of them reach a 100 km/ h in around the same time. Later they took their competition out on the classic racing track. Here a big truck has a clear disadvantage, because of how heavy it is – it simply cannot cope with the corners the same way car can. Therefore, it was given a head start.
You can see the results of this competition in the video below
Why Volvo Trucks is doing this? Well, company is making much crazier videos anyway – this one was much simpler to film. However, it has become a part of company’s identity to prove abilities of its products in the most creative ways possible. It also helps showcasing some of Volvo’s innovations. For example, The Iron Knight has the same transmission as normal FH trucks – they had to install a stronger clutch, but I-Shift Dual Clutch is the same. Finally, Volvo is usually considered to be a cold and very serious brand. This way they can show that they are also enthusiasts, loving what they are doing and enjoying the creative process.
What will be the next Volvo Trucks trick? We can only imagine, but it has to be something special indeed. Crowd now is used to impressive performances and tricks and that is why the company should not let them down.
