Maserati Granturismo and Grancabrio are arguably the most beautiful two-door sports cars on the market. Elegant lines stretching from the decently aggressive face and extremely well sculpted proportions give these cars unmistakably beautiful look. However, they are quite old models and other manufacturers are catching up quickly. But Maserati doesn‘t think there is anything completely wrong with them so now they gave them only some minor styling tweaks.
Granturismo and Grancabrio are actually the same car, later being the convertible version of the first. Granturismo came out a decade ago – that is a very long time for a car model. However, it is not going away any time soon, because, as shows this minor facelift, Maserati still thinks Granturismo can find its place in today’s automotive world. And it is hard to argue – its styling is right on point, it doesn’t seem to age at all. But, of course, some changes have to be made so that your new car would not look like relatively inexpensive vehicle from the used car market bought like five years ago.
Granturismo has been designed by Pininfarina so there is not much to change about it – it really is timeless and as soon as it will be replaced by a new model, it will be an instant classic. But for the 2018 model year Maserati decided to add a new grille. Old one featured a flat, minimalistic design. The new one is something called a “shark nose” – it is 3-dimensional, hexagonal grille, inspired by the Alfieri Concept. It makes the car look a little bit more modern, although we totally didn’t see the need for any upgrades.
Other changes include new, lower air ducts by the grille, which allow for a reduced drag. Grandturismo’s aerodynamic drag coefficient is reduced from 0.33 to 0.32 and GranCabrio’s from 0.35 to 0.33. In theory this should lower fuel consumption and make the cars just that little bit quicker, although we doubt it is possible to notice the difference. Finally, a new rear bumper completes exterior upgrades.
Inside Maserati owners will find a new, high resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen, which allows accessing infotainment system now supporting both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions. The console is slightly lower too, but other than that, interior looks pretty much the same, with four individual Poltrona Frau leather seats with integrated headrests.
Granturismo and Grancabrio are easy to love. Not only these cars looks so beautiful, but they also have a heart of the prancing horse. Yup, 4.7-litre V8 engine, powering these sports cars, was hand-crafted by Ferrari in Maranello. It produces 460hp and 520Nm peak torque and sounds amazing while doing that. The engine is mated to a six-speed ZF Automatic Gearbox – arguably, the weakest spot of the car. It is slow and is much worse than modern two-clutch transmissions.
Maserati is trying to expand its model range and to make more modern cars. Alfieri Concept will sometime soon become an actual sports car, there are other models coming down the line too. This means that eventually time will come to replace the Granturismo and Grancabrio. We secretly hope that the basic exterior styling will remain as elegant and beautiful as it is when mechanicals get redesigned.
