Drone That Flies Like a Copter and Like a Plane

Quadcopters requires less space to take off and land, but fixed-wing drones are more energy-efficient, flies quicker and can cover longer distances. The AeroVironment developed drone, that take and land vertically and transition to horizontal flight while airborne.

The aircraft is programmed via tablet-style controller that runs Android OS. A flightpath is entered by tracing a finger over a map on the tablet’s screen. Finally a user presses Fly on the controller and drone takes off. It proceeds to fly along its predetermined path at a user-selected altitude, gathering data with its multispectral sensors.

After the mission is completed, the drone lands vertically back at its takeoff point. If the user wants to call off the mission on the part-way through, it can be done by pressing the Return Home or Land Now buttons. More information is available in the following video.
