BMW is ready to launch an offensive in a rather niche market segment – M8 is coming

Some pieces of the car market seem to be so niche that only a couple of manufacturers have a go at it. For example, how many large GT coupes do you know? Bentley Continental GT, Aston Martin DB11, Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and that‘s about it. So BMW is already developing a new 8 Series to rival these cars, and, of course, M version is on the way too.

Firstly you should know how BMW comes up with the numbers for its models. 2, 4, 6 and now 8 all will be coupes, while 1, 3, 5 and 7 are normal four-door vehicles. X marks an SUV, while i marks an electric car and M – sports car. So 8 Series is going to be the largest coupe available, partially based on 7 Series limousine. However, when 8 Series finally comes out, it will not be alone – it will be accompanied by M8 and M8 GTE.

BMW M8 is obviously going to be a sportier version of the 8 Series coupe. Exterior will be different in some details. For example, M8 is going to have larger air intakes, modified brakes and a sports exhaust with four tailpipes. Obviously, it is going to be much faster and more powerful than an already sporty and rather quick 8 Series. M8 prototype will be unveiled in a driving presentation as part of the support programme for the Nürburgring 24-hour race, however, this car will be fully camouflaged as not everything has been done already.

BMW M8 is not going to be just another expensive car for driving enthusiasts – it will also go racing. Alongside normal 8 Series and M8 BMW is also developing M8 GTE, which is going to go racing in various endurance events. BMW says that it will spearhead the return of BMW Motorsport to Le Mans. BMW M8 GTE will make its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.

It is quite interesting that BMW chose to develop all three versions at the same time, but it goes to show how capable BMW is as a car manufacturer. Frank van Meel, President BMW M Division, said: “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility”.

BMW 8 Series is planned to be an elegant GT cruiser, which will cross countries with ease. It is going to be subtle and refined, but is likely to have an aggressive face – similar to the one of BMW Concept 8 Series, revealed in this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. BMW is gearing up for the biggest model offensive in the company’s history and more new cars are expected to come out in a few coming years. M8 is going to be essential for BMW’s success in these efforts.

BMW M cars are always very special. But there hasn’t been anything like the new M8 in company’s history. So it is still a big question, whether people are going to choose the new M8 over Bentley or Mercedes-Benz models.
